On the 5th of November the 16th European MTV Music Awards will be held in Berlin, Germany. Before you head to MTV to cast your vote catch up on your VMA, EMA and MTV trivia!

The Nominees Are...
- MTV was launched in New York on August 1st 1981, its original purpose (believe it or not) was to air music videos 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
- The term VJ or Video Jockey was popularized by MTV but was actually invented by Merrill Aldighieri and employee of New York nightclub ‘HURRAH.’ The club was a hangout for the future-founders of MTV.
- Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles was fittingly played as the first music video on MTV
- In the early years, viewer’s would have to suffer momentary blackness between video’s while someone at MTV inserted a new tape into the VCR
- The first bands made popular by MTV included Eurythmics, Culture Club, Prince, Bon Jovi, The Police and Def Leppard
- The rock band KISS publicly appeared without make-up for the first time on MTV in 1983
- The MTV opening video was the Apollo 11 Moon Landing played to the original theme song. Obviously the ‘Moon Man statue’ awarded to the winners of Video Music Awards is a tribute to these early days.
Video Music Awards: Trivia, Facts & Answers (VMA: TFA)
- The first MTV Video Music Awards ceremony was held on September 14, 1984.
- Before 2002 the awards were held on the second week of September but were moved back a week so that they would never coincide with the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
- The three artists to have won the most VMA’s are Madonna (20) Peter Gabriel (13) Aerosmith (10).
- Britney Spears had been nominated 16 times before she finally won 3 awards in 2006
- Arsenio Hall, an actor known for little more than his part in ‘Coming to America,’ hosted the VMA’s for four consecutive years from 1988 – 1991. Comedian Chris Rock has hosted the event 3 times.
- A controversy arose in 2002 when Michael Jackson gave an acceptance speech thanking everyone for his ‘Artist of the Millennium’ award but MTV claimed they were only celebrating his birthday and the award didn’t exist.
European Music Award: Trivia, Facts & Answers (EMA:TFA)
- The first MTV EMA took place in 1994 in Berlin, Germany. The ceremony will return to Berlin on the 5th of November 2009, for Germany’s fourth shot at hosting the awards.
- Unlike the VMAS, Europeans have awarded the most prizes to music icons of this millennium: Eminem (8) and Britney Spears (7).
- This will be the second year that Katy Perry has hosted the European VMAS. Katy is said to be dating Russel Brand, the host of the 2008 and soon to be 2009 VMA’s.
- Brand started his career as a MTV VJ for the program Dance Floor Chart
- Unlike the VMA’s, viewers and fans vote for the majority of the EMA’s
- EMA also stands for Electronic Missile Acquisition, Ethylene Methyl Acrylate and Extra Mileage Allowance
